FACTORS AFFECTING THE LENGTH OF HOSPITAL STAY AFTER REVERSAL OF LOOP ILEOSTOMY PATIENTS
Abstract
Objective: to determine factors affecting the length of hospital stay after reversal of loop ileostomy patients
Study Design: Descriptive Study.
Study Setting: Department of General surgery, Chandka Medical College & Hospital, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University, Larkana. Methodology: After taking written informed consent from the patient/guardian, all patients fitting in the inclusion criteria were enrolled. Demographic information like name, age, gender were also recorded in proforma, laboratory tests like complete blood profile, liver functioning test, RBS/FBS, protein A/G ratio and general anesthesia fitness, cardiac and pulmonology opinion were taken. Surgery was carried out by a single surgeon whose position was no less then senior registrar. Closure of the loop ileostomy was carried out under general anesthesia as per standard procedure and desired outcomes were measured and noted. SPSS software, version: 20 was used for data analysis.
Results: Age range in this study was from 20 to 70 years with mean age was 42.7 ± 9.3 years. Prolonged hospital stay (> 72 hours) in patients underwent reversal loop ileostomy was found in 44 (39.5%). When the factors related to delay in hospital discharge in patients underwent reversal loop ileostomy, significant difference was found
Conclusion: Further, our study concludes that there is significant difference in factors related to duration of hospital stay. Ileostomy closure performed is practical and safe, does not increase morbidity, but reduces the time patient has a stoma and potential stoma related complications. The ideal time point for ileostomy Closure still needs to be determined.
