Abstract

Nurses are the vital part of each nursing care in the health care setting. Patients interact more often with nurses and rely on them for care and restoration of health during hospitalization.

OBJECTIVE: The overriding aim of the study was to examine patients' satisfaction with nursing care at two major public sector tertiary care hospitals of Peshawar.

METHODS: A cross sectional study was carried out at two tertiary care hospitals of Peshawar, Pakistan. 200 patients were selected from medical and surgical wards. Nonprobability convenient sampling technique was used to find out patient satisfaction with nursing care. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 20.

RESULTS: Study included 34.5% male participants and 65.5% female participants (60% medical units, 40% surgical units).Study findings revealed that the total nurses knew about care, 43% of the respondents were very satisfied, about 36% were quite satisfied, 19.5% were barely satisfied only 1.5% were not satisfied. As for nurses care of changing bed dressing regularly just 8.5% of the respondents were not at all satisfied. Vast majority, about 78.5% of the participants were satisfied of nurses' practice of recording vital signs. Furthermore, about 55% of the respondents were not satisfied or were barely satisfied regarding the amount of information nurses gave them about their condition and treatment.

CONCLUSIONS: IStudy findings unveiled that although patients were satisfied with almost all aspects of nursing care however the communication gap between nurse and patient was noted. Communication gap leads to dissatisfaction of the patients. This Nurse patient relationship with proper communication will sets the
tone of the care experience and it will create a powerful impact on patient satisfaction.
