Some Medicinal plants and sex hormones in male Wistar rats
Abstract
Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the comparative effects of aqueous leaves extracts of some medicinal plants; Vernonia amygdalina, Momordica charantia, Moringa oleifera, Jatropha curcas, Phyllantus amarus, and Rauvolfia vomitoria on sex hormone in male Wistar rats.
Materials and Methods: Sixty-five (65) adult male Wistar rats divided into 3 groups: control - 5 rats fed with pellet, test - 30 rats (5/leaf) and recovery - 30 rats (5/leaf) both received 0.3 ml of aqueous leaves extract of the medicinal for 21 days and the recovery group were allowed to recover for another 21 days without extract administration.
Results: The FSH levels of the various medicinal plants with the exception of Phyllantus amarus decreased significantly (p<0.05) and that of Phyllantus amarus increased significantly (p<0.05) when compared to the control group. The LH levels of the various medicinal plants decreased but not significantly (p>0.05) when compared to the control group while the testosterone levels of Momordica charantia, increased significantly (p<0.05) while that of Moringa oleifera decreased significantly (p<0.05) but others decreased but not significantly when compared to the control group. The testosterone level of Jatropha curcas increased but not significantly.
Conclusion: The current study showed that there was a decrease in the blood level of FSH in all the medicinal plants, also there were decrease in the levels of serum testosterone and LH in most of the medicinal plants which indicated negative impact hence, most of these medicinal plants should be used with caution since the usage might lead to infertility.
