PREVELANCE OF HEARING IMPAIRMENT AMONG SCHOOL GOING CHILDREN OF SLUM AREAS OF LAHORE
Abstract
Background: The researcher participated in medical camp of slum areas of Lahore, Researcher saw patients with hearing impairment who were dealing with a range of difficulties, including reduced hearing, daily life disturbances, and listening to normal conversations.
Objective: To find out prevalence of hearing impairment among school children of slum areas of Lahore.
Methodology: An observational cross-sectional study design was performed on a sample of 142 adult both male and female under 4 to 10 years of age visiting two Govt schools of slum area of Lahore and convenient sampling technique. Data was collected from October 2021 to March 2022 and Otoscope and Audiometer was used to collect data, analyzed and evaluated with the help of statistical package for social sciences version 25. The significant level was set as equal as or less than p < 0.05.
Results: Mostly participant was found with normal hearing which was 88.7 %, conductive hearing loss was 9.2 % while only 2.1 % of individuals were diagnosed with Sensorineural hearing loss. A total of 142 children had participated in this study where 81 (57.2 %) male and 61 (43.0 %) female contributed.
Conclusion: According to the current study's findings, schoolchildren in slum regions have hearing impairments. It also demonstrates the likelihood of hearing loss as a result of lack of knowledge, poorer socioeconomic standing, and inadequate medical resources. The participants in our study were also unaware that they had hearing loss. As a result, it was determined that those who had middle ear infections had hearing loss.
