The Prevalence of shoulder pain and disability in college teachers in Lahore.
Abstract
Background: Shoulder pain is reported as the most common occupational-related pain among teachers. This occupational group is exposed and appear to be the most prevalent in shoulder pain due to their work tasks. Studies have linked these higher prevalence rates to prolonged standing of the teachers, their awkward postures, lifting heavy objects, bending postures and the movements which they repeatedly use. Shoulder joint can easily influenced due to heavy work or repeated movements. If there is any problem in shoulder joint and if it persist it may lead to disability. Objective: To find prevalence of shoulder pain and disability in college teachers in Lahore. Methodology: This was an observational study, cross sectional survey with total estimated 383 sample size from which 355 participants were respondents and 28 participants were non respondents. Data is collected from the campuses of Punjab group of colleges Lahore, Concordia group of colleges, and from Government Degree College in 2019. SPADI questionnaire is used for evaluation .Data is entered and analyzed by using SPSS version 20. Results: The results shows that age of participants were between 25 to 55 years number of female participants (54.9%) were more than males (45.1%). Total number of participants were N=355 from which 26.8% participants had mild pain and disability , 41.1% participants had moderate pain and disability, 18.0% had participants had severe pain and disability and 14.1% participants had very severe pain and disability. Conclusion: We concluded that shoulder pain is common complaint among college teachers but moderate shoulder pain is most prevalent and severe shoulder pain is least among college teachers. Shoulder pain is the common cause of limitation in work and disability of college teachers.
