Abstract

Study of Quranic Phonemics in Canorousness of the Holy Quran

One of the important studies amongst the researches of the Quran is the study of Ilm al Fawasil (Knowledge of Quranic Phonemics). Fawasil is a plural of Fasilah, which etymologically means to separate, detach, or distinguish. According to the scholars of Quranic Sciences, Fasilah terminologically is related to the last word of a Quranic verse. It has the same status as Qāfia (rhymes) do in verse and, Qarīnah (contextual indicator) does in Saja’ (euphemism). As in the verse, Al-Ĥamdu Lillāhi Rabbi Al-`Ālamīn, the word Ālamīn is Fasilah. Just as for the canorousness and rhythm of the poetical verses and for the euphemism, the contextual indicator is of utmost importance, similarly, the vocal aesthetics and canorousness of the Quran are incomplete without Fasilah. Albeit it is very important to keep in mind that the Quranic verses in order to be melodious don’t necessarily abide by the rules of Phonology. Instead of the aesthetics of Quranic verses, beyond the human literary realm, Quran has devised its own consistent standard and criterion and in this regard Rhymes of the Quran hold the key position. According to these defined standards for the aesthetics of the Quran, these Quranic Rhymes have been structured.  The choral splendour of the poetry is dependent upon the coherence of the cadences and following the Phonological rules. Similarly, Euphemism also pertains to its contextual indicators. But the Quran despite comprising all prosaic and poetical attributes transcendent the restrictions of rhymes and cadences. Albeit in poetical nuances, one is the internal rhythm of the verses which is unequivocally present in the Quran. The proximate rhymers in the Phonetics of the Quran have eluded it from the constraints of assonant and intonations. Because of bearing these tasteful phonological stylistics Quran appears to be laden with all vocal and symphonic artistry.
