Abstract

Social Media has revolutionized the concept of communication, education and entertainment during the present era. It has become an integral part of life for the young people. Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, YouTube, Myspace, Google+ etc. are the multiple faces of social media. Youngsters spend most of their time in expressing their feelings in terms of ‘Likes’, ‘Status Updates’ and Tweets. Self-projection is at its apex. The most important features of social media are: it is free, it is easily accessible, it is interactive, it is compatible with the modern mobile devices and it has quick and far-reaching impacts. But these modern modes are not without their vices. Social values are deteriorating quite fast and generation gap is quite vivid in our society. Our family system that has been a strong bond throughout history is under serious threats. Norms and traditions are changing shape and western values are no more alien for us. Health and education of our young generation is badly suffering because of excessive use of social media. The habit of book reading is dying out. Ethical values are decaying as parental control over the use of social media is practically nowhere in our society. It is the need of the hour to take this issue seriously and find practical methods to release, or if not possible at least keep less harmed, our young generation from the clutches of social media.
