Abstract

Islam is the best protector and flag bearer of the human rights but presently Muslim societies are facing various forms of modern slavery such as colonial supremacy, child labour, discriminatory customs against women, human trafficking etc. These issues should be handled in the guidance of Seerah of the Prophet (SAW).

The slavery, in vogue, in the era of the Prophet (SAW) was gradually eliminated from the society as many virtues and bounties were quoted in the Holy Quran and Hadith for releasing slaves that no other noble deed would hardly match it.  Islamic teachings encourage to set the slaves free in Karfarat (expiates) like in violating Saum, Qatl, Tahara, Qasam, Zihare etc. The Prophet (SAW) is quoted to have said that if someone punishes his slave unjustifiably then the best kaffarah for him is to set him free.
